For my clay whistle design and inspiration I decided to use a brown bear holding a bee hive, with three little bees flying around. My clay whistle, in my eyes, is successful because it does make a whistle which is a very low or deep beautiful sound to match its personality. Now that it’s painted, I think that it brings the bear to life and gives it a lot of characteristics. But some challenges when painting the whistle included the struggle of reaching the small cracks and crevices around the bear and also coloring the bees was hard too because they were so small. If I could start this project completely over I don’t really think that I would change anything at all other than maybe adding a little more detail and making scratches in the surface of the clay to represent the fur. But other than that i love my whistle and the deep tone it makes to match its personality. Even though my bear has a personality it also has an and identity as a brown bear.
This project was basically just making a clay whistle and then creating a more complex character or object out of it. From my plain clay whistle I transformed it into a bear with soon to be flying bees. The bear is also holding a bee hive and that is where the bees are going to be coming out of. I definatly feel that this project was much harder than the Pinch Pot because this project had much more careful clay designs and attachments while the Pinch Pot was really very simple. I think that I enjoyed this clay whistle project more than the Pinch Pot because it was so much fun to create, design and think of. I also love being able to hear the whistle. I personally thought that attaching the bear’s body to the actual whistle was quite challenging and my teacher needed to help me on that but all of the other designs and processes were fairly easy but some of them just took a little time to perfect. To finish my clay whistle I will be painting my bear a black or brown color then with the sgraffito Tool and paint I will make lots of little fine marks to represent the bears fur, also for the bees it will paint them yellow and black with white wings. Once I have painted it them I will add a couple layers of glaze to get more shine. I have truly had a lot of fun with this clay whistle project and am excited for the next one.
